missionA security firm hired by the District of Mission will be in the downtown between 6 and 10 AM, encouraging homeless people sleeping in the doorways of businesses to move along.

Mayor Randy Hawes says it’s hoped this will be just a temporary measure while other organizations do what they can to help the homeless.

“We’re really hoping that the ACT team and a second thing that we have started called Stone Soup, which is the integration of all of our social agencies who have come together trying to work with these folks to get, particularly the ones who have mental illness or addiction challenges or both, to get them where they need to be to get better.”

For now Hawes says it’s necessary because some workers were having trouble getting to their doors, and in some cases the homeless were behaving aggressively, intimidating people.
