Hey everyone! What an awesome start to my road trip adventure, presented by O’Connor RV. Things have not slowed down one bit from our day yesterday in Barkerville. Take a look at what I did today:

It was hard to get out of my comfortable bed this morning in the luxurious Captain’s Suite in the Billy Barker Casino and Hotel located right in the downtown core of Quesnel, but the excitement of the day ahead quickly had me up and ready to go. We started the morning off with a huge breakfast at Granville’s Coffeehouse, which, like Savala’s Steakhouse, is also only two blocks from the hotel and perfect for walking to to start the morning!

Something that instantly struck a chord with me about Granville’s Coffeehouse was the relationship between the staff and the customers. I sat for a while as I ate my breakfast of cinnamon buns, muffins, and a fruit smoothie and I watched a dozen or so customers come in to order. I was impressed at the staff for being able to develop a personal relationship with each customer as they both went about their daily routines in a way that showed Granville’s Coffeehouse really cares about the people in the community of Quesnel. This friendly service makes Granville’s Coffeehouse a top priority stop for anyone coming to the Quesnel area this summer.

After breakfast, it was off to the river to do some rafting with Big Canyon Rafting! Well, first I got lost and drove 20 minutes to the wrong side of Quesnel only to find out the rafting trip left from just down the street from Granville’s Coffeehouse, but after sorting that out THEN it was off to the river to do some rafting. The guys at Big Canyon Rafting are some of the raddest guys I’ve ever met. You can tell right away that these guys are living their dream and they’re stoked to share it with you! The owner, Tyler (not a bad name, by the way) was eager to share his stories from his rafting adventures from decades of experience all over the world and was also a wealth of knowledge about the history of Quesnel and the surrounding rivers.

With a quick safety lesson under our belts, we jumped right in to the rafts and headed down the Quesnel River Canyon and through some gnarly rapids. Each set of rapids seemed to grow more intense, until the very last set of rapids, dubbed “Genghis Conquer”, when our entire raft got tossed by a huge wave and we almost flipped in to the river. Fortunately, Tyler was on his A-game today and way able to counter-balance the raft before we all went for a surprise dip.

The rest of the trip was spent swimming (consensually) in the Quesnel River along side the raft and floating leisurely with the current, enjoying some fresh pineapple and some crazy rafting stories from Tyler’s time as a guide in Morocco. It was over all too soon, as it was soon time to part ways with my newly gained friends, but of course there is still more adventuring to be had and it was time to drive to my next location.

I’ll be spending the night at the Kumsheen Rafting Resort, just outside of Lytton and then I’ll be hopping on another raft to have some more fun on the river tomorrow morning.
