traffic lightsChilliwack director of planning David Blain says the City hasn’t had any recent requests from the public for traffic lights at the Superstore entrance, although they have had several in the past for the Luckakuck corridor.
Friday’s serious accident at the Superstore has had some questioning whether traffic improvements are needed at that location.  A woman pulling out of the parking lot onto Luckakuck collided with another vehicle, and she had to be extracted from her car and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Blain says if the City does look at an intersection it does an investigation on traffic patterns.

“We have a look at traffic volumes, history of the intersection, and then we do an analysis based on Transportation Association of Canada standards…they’re called TAC standards.  From there we have a basic formula for calculating what’s needed at a given intersection.”

This also helps determine whether it needs a roundabout or traffic lights.

“For example, yes, we’re putting roundabouts on Prest Rd because in a lot of lower volume cases, they make the best sense.  In more high traffic areas, traffic signals are necessary.”

Blain says in the case of Luckakuck, any improvements made would have to take into account how it would impact all the other businesses on the road.
