vedder riverThe small snowpack we had over the winter means the water levels in the rivers are lower than we’ve seen in previous years.

However Chilliwack search and rescue manager Doug Fraser says while the lower water levels can make rivers safer to play in, people need to make sure they don’t have a false sense of security.

“Something that’s moving at a slower pace or at a lower level than you’re used to seeing at this time of year doesn’t mean that the water’s still not powerful and could sweep you off your feet.”

Fraser says you should also stay away from wood, logs, and other debris, because if you get knocked off your feet it’s easy to become pinned or swept under something.

He says another danger is getting your foot trapped under a rock while trying to stand up after being knocked over by water currents.
