We were saddened today to wake up to the news that long time Chilliwack school trustee Martha Wiens had passed away.  She died peacefully on Wednesday night surrounded by loved ones.  Wiens has spent the last 25 years of her life serving on the school board…she was first elected in 1990.  Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.  The school district says there will be a service to honor Martha…we’re still waiting on those details.

STATEMENT FROM SCHOOL DISTRICT 33 SUPERINTENDENT EVELYN NOVAK:

It is with heartfelt sadness that the Chilliwack Board of Education acknowledges the passing of long serving Trustee Martha Wiens.
A lifetime member of the British Columbia School Trustees Association, Wiens will be remembered for her extended service and commitment to the children and families of the Chilliwack School District.
In her ninth term as trustee Martha continued to attend regular meetings of the board, visit liaison schools and serve on the Budget, Apprenticeship and Scholarship Committees. Serving the citizens of Chilliwack for more than two decades, there can be no doubt that Martha touched the lives of many.
The void left by her passing will be filled with the legacy of her service, the memory of her smile and her passion for the children.
The Board, along with the Staff of School District No. 33, join Martha’s family and friends in mourning the loss of their beloved Mother, Grandmother and friend and send their thoughts and prayers to the family at this most difficult time.
