Old Safeway building may soon meet its demise

It looks like the old Safeway building in downtown Chilliwack may finally be coming down.
It’s been an eyesore for years…it’s boarded up and it’s decaying. City council could pass a resolution as soon as this week that would set up demolition for some time in the next 90 days. The former owners were fined twice by the city for failing to maintain the vacant building. The new owners of Safeway, Sobey’s, said they’ve been in touch with city officials, but haven’t said whether they had plans to sell the building. It’s believed this building coming down is one of the keys to downtown redevelopment.
