bike-39393_640The B.C. government is providing Chilliwack with $51,607 toward a BikeBC project.

The project will create a half kilometre 1.5 metre-wide bike lanes extending from Sumas Prairie at #6905 Road to Sumas Prairie Road north property line of the elementary school. The total cost of the project is $103,214.

“Cycling is gaining popularity not only as a transportation alternative but also for recreation,” said Chilliwack MLA John Martin. “These lanes will enhance safety for everyone sharing the roads in our community.”

“The City of Chilliwack is pleased to partner with the province on this much needed initiative to expand and enhance cycling opportunities in our community,” said Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “As part of the City’s ongoing program, this will encourage alternate modes of transportation and provide health and environmental benefits.”

BikeBC is the government’s cost-sharing program that helps local governments build cycling projects that attract and support commuter, recreational and tourism cyclists and pedestrians.
