822015-81348_Harrison-Lake-FSR-Aug-2-1-e1438620811932-878x494(News1130) The public is causing a dangerous situation for crews working the Wood Lake fire near Harrison Hot Springs. People are still coming into restricted areas on a daily basis and there’s worry someone will get killed.

They’re coming in on dirt bikes, ATVs and in one case, in an RV. Fire Information Officer Jordan Turner says they’re doing the best they can to warn people to stay away. “We have several signs up off the beaten path… We do have large signs on our main roads. These are all logging roads. And we have put security on a lot of these entrances.”

The Wood Lake fire is 40 per cent contained right now. Turner says crews are doing clearing work which means they’ll be knocking down trees. “Without our radio frequencies or knowledge or proper equipment, it’s a quite dangerous area. It’s a very dangerous job and it becomes more so when people from the public are going to places they shouldn’t be during an active wildfire.”

Turner says people caught in restricted areas are being reported to the RCMP, but it’s not clear if people who break the rules will be charged.

The province-wide fire picture improved over the weekend with the help of some cooler, wetter weather. Just three new fires started Sunday.
