bc transit2Chilliwack Councilor Jason Lum says the FVRD wants to take a resolution to the Union of BC Municipalities Convention in the fall to ask the province to reconsider the budget freeze for BC Transit.

Lum says BC Transit will be able to meet their current responsibilities but that the budget will stay flat.

“The big concern with us is that we have expansion plans for the next three years and some really exciting things that we’d like to do and of course we won’t be able to do those without a contribution from the province and BC Transit.”

Lum says he hopes the province doesn’t consider this area a lower priority because it isn’t in Metro Vancouver.

“A lot of time and effort and media coverage is spent on Translink and this transit plebescite that’s happening, but the reality is when you see some of the dollars they’re talking about for the transit improvements that they’d like, we spend a minute fraction of that on our whole transit system out here.”

Lum says the City wants to increase the Fraser Valley Express service and also to bring transit to areas that don’t currently get it.
