hamishUFV political science professor Hamish Telford says the federal budget released yesterday seems to be primarily geared towards upper middle class families.

Telford says one example is allowing people to make higher annual contributions to tax-free savings accounts.

He says that’s only a benefit if you can afford it.

“Some people don’t have leftover cash to put in a tax free savings account so the fact that that’s being doubled does nothing to help a huge number of people, not just low income people but even middle income people.”

Telford also says taking money out of things like the contingency fund just to show a surplus is a purely political move, saying a billion or two dollars on surplus or deficit is economically insignificant.
